The Weakness Avoidance Loop

A basketball player realizes he has a weakness, such as three point shooting. Because he is afraid of the struggle and embarrassment that comes with fixing his weakness, he avoids practicing his three point shoot in both practices and games. Because he avoids practicing his three point shooting, it remains a weakness. The longer he goes without fixing his weakness, the weaker it becomes, which deepens his fear of confronting and fixing his weakness. The more an athlete gets sucked into the weakness avoidance loop, the harder it is to break out of it. 

The weakness avoidance loop can be a major obstacle in the development of athletes, which is why it's so important to fight against. It can be difficult, but it's completely possible to stop procrastinating about fixing your weaknesses. Breaking out of the weakness avoidance loop mainly requires motivation and courage. At some point you need to be fed up with your weaknesses. You must acknowledge when they're holding you back and be determined to fix them so you can improve and reach your goals. But even with lots of motivation, breaking out of a weakness avoidance loop can be difficult because of the anxiety it gives you. It can be scary to fix a weakness. Seeing yourself struggle and fail, especially in front of others can make you feel bad about yourself. You need to build up the courage to work on your weaknesses and take risks in games. You can do this by telling yourself that it's okay to fail and make mistakes. Remember, if you're not making mistakes, you're not challenging yourself enough. Also, remind yourself that your coaches and teammates will support you as you try to improve. Lastly, be confident that your hard work will pay off! Know that it's possible for you to fix your weaknesses if you commit yourself to it.

As you can see, breaking out of a weakness avoidance loop is challenging, which is why it's best to prevent yourself from falling into them in the first place. As soon as you become aware of a weakness avoidance loop developing, you need to break out of it. The sooner you notice a weakness avoidance loop forming, the easier it is to break it. I suggest you build a healthy habit of working on your weaknesses consistently in practice. The more you face your fears of fixing weaknesses, the easier it becomes. By solving the weakness avoidance loop issue, you can drastically increase your development as an athlete!
